Has anyone ever seen the cartoon with the голубой puppy and the sailor?

1) Is this supposed to be symbolic?

2) Where could I get a copy here in the U.S., or especially on the Internet?

1. No. It is musical story for children. It was made thirty or so years ago, when the word голубой had only one meaning - light blue.

You are quite wrong :) The word had its other meaning back then, and the authors of this project knew about it without a doubt.

I am not quite sure authors had this meaning. In my opinion this meaning began spread at least 5 years after I have seen this cartoon for the first time (but I may be wrong, of course, and also this meaning could reach my city after a while it had been known to the artistic circle in Moscow). And this is what the author (Yry Antin) says:

It's based on Gyula Urban's fairy tale, and I doubt there's any sodomite symbolism in the Hungarian word for "light blue".

Didn't real all the comments - but I just have to say that is my favorite movie, and wow, how I like the song, and the Mironof being the evil black cat.

Don't know, really -it also seems to me that it's more about nationality and being from differnt ethnic background then sexual orientation.

And anyway, THE FILM IS JUST A SCREEN VERSIION OF THE HUNGARIAN BOOK about unhappy blue puppy.

I really doubt that in Hungarian blue color has the same connotation.

I know that it existed. It wasn't as widespread as "пилить" in the sense I mentioned.

I didn't read all the comments, but I did see the "Goluboj Shenok" a few months ago - to me there's no doubt about the double meaning - it is evident through out the cartoon. The sailor's costume, for example, resembles in nothing a uniform from any navy I know of - it's a flowery costume from San Francisco of the 70s.

I'm surprised the cartoon came out at all in the USSR. May be the cenors didn't understand - the cartoon is very experimental and in some instances the imagery is pure abstraction with just colours and no forms (during the battle scene for example). May be the cartoon was forbidden after it came out and someone pointed out its double meaning - I don't remember ever seeing it on TV in the 80s, but I had the record with the soundtrack which is less evident.

1)I think, you can get this cartoon through Netflix - they have a selection of the best Russian cartoons of 1970-1980. Just check it out, I think, I saw "The blue puppy" there.

2) One of the cartoon creators (Yuri Norshtein) told once in an interview, that he was very sorry to find out the second meanning of the word "goluboy"/"blue". He told, the color was not picked intentionally. IMHO, I doubt it.
