[identity profile] alpacacock.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] learn_russian
I've been trying to find a Russian expression with the same meaning as "swallow your pride". When I try to use online translators I keep coming up with things that are closer to "eat crow" than what I'm looking for.

Translating the words more directly I get this: проглотить гордость свою

Is that a phrase which would ever be seen in Russian?
Is it ordered correctly?

Do you know of a more appropriate way I could say "swallow your pride" in Russian?
I really want the concept of "swallowing" to be existent in the Russian version.

Thanks!

Проглотить гордость. Swallow your pride and just do it. – Проглоти гордость и просто сделай это.

"Просто сделай это" — sounds VERY English in Russian ;-)

Native speakers do say it nowadays.

Many native speakers (in any language) say A LOT of things incorrectly. "Просто сделай это" is a horrible calque from English.

The one and only criteria of correctness here is whether these “things” are spoken by native speakers.

If native speakers speak things, the things are spoken correctly.

That’s what the concept of native speaking stands for, and that’s because the Russian (or, for example, English) language is by definition the language spoken by Russian (English) people – not, let me make it clear, what is written down in dictionaries or anything.

Some people say "мы хочем" or "более лучше". This is not a norm and should not be taught to language learners as such.

And, even worse, some people say “я”, which is total nonsense because we know that the norm is and always was “аз”.

If this was an attempt to joke, it was not funny.

The first is imperative (singular), the second is infinitive. Those are two different verb forms.

> проглотить гордость свою
This word order looks a little archaic though is used at the time.
"проглотить гордость" sounds a little better to me — Russian reader will definitely understand what was meant.
But exact phrase depends on a context. Just "Swallow your pride!" order would be translated as "Проглоти гордость!"

Appropriate Russian phrase I met is "Засунуть гордость подальше" (Put your pride somewhere deep enough) or, much more literate "Забыть про гордость" (Forget about pride).

If it's propaganda, then it might be imperative. Проглоти [свою] гордость!

Yes, and «Забыть про гордость» / «Забыть о гордости», as well as more rude «Засунуть свою гордость подальше», seems to be used more often, while the concept of swallowing is more often applied to grievance («Проглотить обиду»).

it's possible to say "смирить свою гордость" also, i suppose

And if you want to be much more colloquial, there is a range of options starting with mild "Не выеживайся!" all the way to a similar-sounding (just one sound different!) but obscene one. :D

Just change "жи" to "бы". But it's very rude, remember it.

Don't try it with "бы", it's really obscene, as far as I understand it's much stronger than fuck and shit.

Wow, are you sure that's ok to do such posters? I wouldn't use stronger language anyway, it's only a marker of rudeness and lack of education.

Well, in that case you can translate it literally: "Проглоти свою гордость". It's OK, just a common sentence. It will be perfect, and you don't need to use rude language.

I second this. Here it's much better to use a bit calqued but still normal expression 'Проглоти свою гордость' than any more 'natively Russian' variant with losing the original ambiguity, that is the very marrow of the poster, as I understand. :)

I would even say - засунь свою гордость куда подальше
but it would be even emmmmm more rude

"Наступить на горло собственной песне" - literally "to step on a throat of your own song", could be used a variation on "swallow yout pride" topic

From: [identity profile] ember-cyprus.livejournal.com
that's a VERY far-fetched variation ;)

wants... whatever... :)) I'd say it could be used, too. "Не выделывайся" is also a quite peculiar connotation )))

...let's not mislead them :) Наступить на горло собственной песне - means to do something agianst one's will, due to circumstances or compelled by duty. It has little to nothing to do with pride.

one of the meanings of "swallow your pride" is "to accept that you have to do something that you think is embarrassing or that you think you are too good to do" - Swallow your pride and call your daughter to tell her you're sorry.

In this case I think the meaning is quite close to the idiomatic example I took from Russian.

surely it is just a variation

we usually use "swallow" in "swallow the insult" meaning, i.e. "проглотить обиду". with pride it is more likely to use "смирить гордыню" though it is quite archaic, or just "смирись" - "take it as it is, you can't change anything". dictionary also gives "подавить самолюбие" as a translation. So, basically you suppress or lessen your pride, but you swallow the insult :))

Colloq.: "засунь свою гордость поглубже"
Obscene: "не выёбывайся"
