How to format a casual (friend to friend) letter in Russian?

-ла suffix as a diminutive in Russian?

What is the origin of using -ла to make a diminutive? My grandmother applies this to words sometimes, but I'm not sure if it's чистый русский or influenced from Yiddish. I can only think of a few examples.

1. Googie (Гуги) is my cousin. Grandmother sometimes calls her Googala (Гугала).
2. Sometimes you can call a sluggish person a pączkala (пончкала) in a friendly way.

Following in the footsteps of other diligent Russian learners in this community, I have decided to make a livejournal account just for writing in Russian. So if any of you have time, please please add naverna_nyet and help me with my written Russian. :D!

Also, would it be feasible to create something like a list of Russian journals of the Russian learners, for reference, in case people feel inclined to offer their language expertise? I don't know if there are enough people who have created separate Russian (practice writing sort of) journals that it would be necessary for a list though. Just an idea.

Every Thursday night my Russian class meets at a cafe for conversation. I corrected my teacher's error in class, so he said he would buy me a drink. At the cafe, he kept saying, "Антон, будешь чаю?" or "Будешь квас?". What's the deal with this construction? Does it actually mean "are you going to have some tea (kvas)?"
