why does alaska have the preposition на, not в in front of it in the following sentance:

Семья моего дяди живёт на Аляске.

hello there! tomorrow i am giving a presentation in my russian class about Laika. I'd greatly appreciate any comments and/or corrections to what i plan on saying. thank you!

Лайка - собака и космонавт

Я хотела бы говорить о известной собаке. Какие известные собаки вы знаете? (Pluto, Goofy, Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, Old Yeller, Otte (from Garfield), Air Bud).
Сегодня, я буду говорить о советской собаке, Лайка.
Лайка была не только первая собака в космосе, но первое существо от земли в космосе! Она была беспризорной собакой которая была найдена, блуждая улицы в Москве. Первоначально называли "Кудравка", но они изменили её имя из-за её породы. К сожалению, Лайка умерла спустя несколько часов после старта, (может быть 5-7 часов), наиболее вероятно от стресса и перегрева. Советские официальные сказали, что Лайка прожила проложенный срок и была умерщвлена при помощи отравленнай пищи! Истинная причина смерти Лайки не была обнароднована до десятлетий после полета. Это причинило много спор в многих странах, и много советских учёных выразили сожаление для того, чтобы позволить Лайку умерть. Американская пресса назвала её "Мутник", игра слов на Спутнике. И это - рассказ о советской собаке и космонавте, Лайка!

I have a midterm in my Russian class and one of the questions I could be asked pertains to my class schedule.

How would I express that I have a class at a certain time? I can't imagine it would be as simple as using есть but correct me if I am wrong. I'm sure there are lots of ways, but I just want to know the most common, or simplest... Thank you in advance.

Being that I already had previous knowledge of Russian I did not start at my university's beginning level Russian where this was covered and the textbook is of no help either. I would be grateful for any help that anyone has to offer.

I suppose my last entry I didn't word very well.

Really I want to know if it's acceptable to say something like "у меня биология в час" or would I need to say "у меня урок биологии в час" or am I completely wrong?

Hello. It's a question mostly to those who teach Russian to foreigners. What texts would you recommend for a preintermediate learner? It is for reading with the purpose of getting new vocabulary and grammar patterns and then activating it through retelling, paraphrasing, and discussion.
