I'm stuck on one silly little word for my translation, can anybody help?

For context's sake, it's basically an account of the journey of Peter I around Germany, and on his travels he's met two princesses who invite him to dinner. He goes, can't speak German, they have a jolly time, although they are quite taken aback by his lack of manners/fact he can't use a napkin properly.

оживленные и, судя по описанию

It's the first word I'm stuck on, my dictionary is giving me 'recovered', which makes no sense in this context. I think they rest of it runs 'according to the account/description'.

Ooh, and this:

сам работает над постройкой кораблей

Talking about how he doesn't take that much of an interest in music, rather in sea-faring.. and then that quote comes. Something like 'it works above the construction of the ships', but that makes no sense?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

I'm writing a thank-you letter to my Russian teacher for writing a letter of recommendation for me. Is anyone willing to take a quick look at it before I write it out? I don't want to have any embarrassing mistakes. It's about five sentences long, below the cut.

Hello everyone.
My name is Elena, I'm Russian and I live in Moscow.
I've been learning English for 10 years and have quite a good level of it but still I lack oral speech.
So if there are any native English speakers here who live in my city, learn Russian and would like to meet me in order to help each other, I'd be very glad.
Thank you.
