I'm stuck on one silly little word for my translation, can anybody help?

For context's sake, it's basically an account of the journey of Peter I around Germany, and on his travels he's met two princesses who invite him to dinner. He goes, can't speak German, they have a jolly time, although they are quite taken aback by his lack of manners/fact he can't use a napkin properly.

оживленные и, судя по описанию

It's the first word I'm stuck on, my dictionary is giving me 'recovered', which makes no sense in this context. I think they rest of it runs 'according to the account/description'.

Ooh, and this:

сам работает над постройкой кораблей

Talking about how he doesn't take that much of an interest in music, rather in sea-faring.. and then that quote comes. Something like 'it works above the construction of the ships', but that makes no sense?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

1. 'оживлённые' = 'animated', 'lively'; 'судя по описанию' is 'according to description'.
2. he works at the construction of the ships himself.

1. When working with dictionary there's an iron rule: never grab first translation and run for it -- you've surely mistaken. "Оживлённые" can mean "reanimated", but most oftem it simply mens "lively".

2. Always be careful with prepositions, and again -- don't just substitute first translation you found in dictionary. This sentence actually means just "works on shipbuilding himself". BTW -- Russian has ellipsis: that is, various parts of a sentence could be omitted and just assumed from the context -- here it's the subject, it is assumed that it's tzar himself works at shipbuilding, not some "it".

оживленные и, судя по описанию

оживленные = crowded, busy (street, roads)

or

оживленные = lively, joyful (about person)

сам работает над постройкой кораблей

literally -- he is working at shipbuilding yard (big ships or small yacht -- it doesn't matter)

"работать над" = "to work on"
