Is "Я стыжусь чего–то" much more bookish than Мне стыдно за что–то... or are they both fairly interchangable phrases?

I would say мне стыдно за что-то instead of я стыжусь... the latter seems too bookish for me. But it could be different to other native speakers.

Btw, I would rather say мне стыдно, что something happened or I did something. It seems to be more common usage than мне стыдно за что-то.
