Random? Slang term (not dictionary translation!

How would you say "random" (or something similar) in Russian? For example: "That is the most random thing I've ever heard."
Thanks and sorry for the dumb question.

EDIT: What I mean by "random" is: something someone does or says which is completely unrelated to anything at that moment and is often looked at as humorous. It is slang for when someone just says or does  something totally "off-the-subject".  Out-of-the-blue is probably the closest phrase to this word (that I can think of at the moment).

In this context "random" = Белиберда, несуразица, нонсенс, абсурд
as opposite of "order"

Абсурда sounds too literary here, more colloquial would be

Никогда не слышал большей чуши/большей глупости/большего бреда etc.

I think "фигня", "глупость" or even (rarely used) "чушь" will be more exact translation.

"Out-of-the-blue" = "неожиданно", "как гром среди ясного неба". I would also add "с потолка" (from nowhere). Examples:

"The news about his death came out of the blue." = "Известие о его смерти было громом среди ясного неба."
"She took this idea out of the blue." = "Она взяла эту идею с потолка."

Imho абсурд refers more to something crazy more than sudden.

Now we use the word "рандом".
I should say there is no similar word for "random" in Russian language.
Maybe "случайность", "случайный выбор" are the best variants.

It looks that you confused the people you were asking :) Not many of them apparently knew that "random" is today's teenagers' slang, so they started to explain its non-slang, dictionary meaning (which is seemingly different from its slang meaning.) It would be a good idea to update the original post with a note that you try to find an equivalent to a slang expression, with an explanation what this word actually means in modern American English slang.

I assure you that people were using random number generators even before the dawn of computer era. And all the time they had a proper Russian name - генераторы случайных чисел. There is no need to use a calque for that, unless you don't really know your own language (then, of course, you have to use calques, creating смесь французского с нижегородским).

I don't think you should offer any of these expressions to language learners. It is not just annoying - it is confusing and it is wrong. They can learn slang later, after they master normative Russian well enough to tell right from wrong.

oryx_and_crake is 100% right. I don´t want to offend anybody, but very few learners can afford using slang, just because nobody will understand it.

If a foreigner says гудово, йес, мей би etc, nobody will get it as a joke or Russian slang. The impression will be that they´re mixing the languages coz they don´t know the Russian word.

I have never heard a Russian say рэндом/рандом, although I believe programmers use it. Well, they use a lot of ¨terms¨ that are unintelligible for ¨civilians¨:=)

Yeah, I never use slang or Новояз or bad words, it sounds really bad whith my accent and my far from flawless grammar. It is really hard to be ironic aswell, I've tried so many times... and people tell me "We don't talk like that in Russian" and I have to explain: "we dont talk like that in Swedish either, but I talk like that!" It's the same thing when swedish learning Russian friends try to be ironic in swedish, it doesn't work... I can tell my Russian friends when they ask me if something i s correct in sweish "Well if I said so, no one would say it was wrong, but if you formulated a sentence like that, you would most probably be corrected!"
