I think the best would be пока он писал роман or когда он писал роман. Verbal adverb is hardly used in this case.

в оперу means that you`re going to a musical theater.
на оперу emphasizes that you`re going to listen opera.

If you mean "going to specific event" - на.

But I've never heard people saying it that way. Usually they mention in which particular opera theater they work. Like: «Я работаю в Большом Театре».

Yeah, that would be a strong case, you can't say "я работаю на опере".

Form for "the Opera" would be "я {пою/играю/принимаю участие} в опере {название}".

пишучи sounds all right but somewhat obsolete; the peoper form would be probably пиша but it sounds very awkward and I don't think it's ever used

Thank you for your contribution. Please note that the working language of this community is English. As to the problem in question, there is a proverb: Quod licet Jovi non licet bovi. Which means that what Brodsky can afford the mere mortals probably cannot.

The fact is that I am referring to those cases where Brodsky uses this word form not in his poems, but in his lectures, and thus he appears not as Jupiter but as a usual person.

Well, people (and even famous Rusian writers) do/did say both пиша and пишучи, but I would recommend against using these forms.

There is a scene in the famous Russian movie "Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears" at the workers' dormitory where one of them makes fun of the other for saying "идти в оперу." I'm guessing it is for this very reason, but I don't have a good enough understanding of the nuances on this topic to know for sure. Does anyone remember the scene I'm talking about?
