на оперу emphasizes that you`re going to listen opera.

But I've never heard people saying it that way. Usually they mention in which particular opera theater they work. Like: «Я работаю в Большом Театре».

Form for "the Opera" would be "я {пою/играю/принимаю участие} в опере {название}".

пишучи sounds all right but somewhat obsolete; the peoper form would be probably пиша but it sounds very awkward and I don't think it's ever used
