Um. Thanks. Those were more of typos due to delirium due to sleep deprivation. I was copying (poorly) from a book. It's the Russian to English part that I need the most help with but thanks for those corrections, too.

Yes, there is another girl in the picture. It's a sort of long, continuous text and the part that spoke of the other girl wasn't close enough in the surrounding sentences or paragraphs for me to include and I just didn't think to include a note telling about the other girl since I didn't not fully understand what I was reading. Your are right, there was something for her to worry about while she was preparing dinner. I've pieced together things from what you guys have all posted and it all makes sense. Here's my translation:

The family sat at dinner in full company. Tanya's older brother Dimitry and his wife came to visit. [Tanya didn't stir from the kitchen/ wasn't worrying from the kitchen in vain. Tanya's father gladly invited the observant girl.

I gave you a translation above. But I still don't understand what girlS have Tanya's father noticed. There is only one girl, Tanya. Dmitry [please do not spell it dImitry] and his wife are certainly not girls. Maybe Tanya and Dmitry's wife qualify as "girls"? But what about Dmitry then? Wasn't he invited too? And what was the reason for Tanya to worry - was it the fact that some girls were invited to the table?

The text is from a book called Рассказы из Сегодняшнй России - A Reader for Intermediate Students of Russian and published by McGraw Hill. Too bad you've found a grammar error! Maybe my Russian will get even worse the more that I study. ;) My friend Kostya was flipping through it recently and found f 'б' in a word where they should have been a 'в'. :(

Actually, не зря волновалась из-за ужина does not imply that she participated in making it. It only means that she was uneasy/nervous about it and that she had a valid reason for that.

Assuming Tanya did not participate in making supper, then we must assume a negative turn of events. Otherwise her being vindicated for having worried about supper makes little sense.

"It was not in vain that Tanya had been agitated concerning supper. On seeing the girls Tanya's father gladly invited...."

Basically, the broader context will determine your choice of words here. Since you mentioned the word "kitchen" in your original attempt, is it the case that you knew that Tanya had been in the kitchen (preparing supper)? Why do you think that Tanya had been worried? Was this a special social occasion? What was unique about it?

No, she didn't participate in preparing supper. That assumption came from a very incorrect translation of a the sentence containing the word из-за and that assumption lead to the wrong idea that she was preparing supper. :(

I think my confusion stems from the way I translated 'из-за'. I first ran across the word in a short story by Chekhov in which he wrote that the sun was peeking out from behind (из-за) the clouds. That means 'from out of' or 'from behind', yes? What does it mean here?
