hello,

I have a question about understanding a sentence I'm translating...

...лихорадочные спазмы, в которых тонет фабула, как чертики, появляются и исчезают герои

this is about Moskva-Petushki; the word чертик used here -- would it be a reference to the phrase "напиться до чёртиков"? Or is it something else? I'm at a loss.

thank you,
t.

EDIT: thank you everyone

Чортик (чёртик) - маленький чорт.

"Напиться до чёртиков" - напиться до белой горячки (Delirium tremens)так, чтобы видеть галлюцинации.

Но "появиться и исчезнуть, как чортик" произошло от другого: была раньше такая игрушка - шкатулка, из которой выскакивал на пружинке, а затем прятался обратно маленький чортик. Означает это выражение: вдруг неожиданно появиться и тут же исчезнуть, не оставив следа.

чорт is just the old spelling, so you can see it in books printed before the ...er... like, the middle of the 20th century.

"Чорт" - is an old way for writing this word.

It is still correct to write such way and I like it. ;-)

No, it's not correct, on the contrary: it's a spelling error. Don't mislead people studying the language.

I repeat again this is not a mistake. This is an old way for spelling this word. You can find this type of spelling in many books and dictionaries.

Of course im modern language such form is very rare but it's still correct.

P.S. Wikipedia is not an authoritative source of information... ;-)

The old spelling being in an explanatory dictionary is nothing surprising. I gave you a reference to a spelling dictionary. Good luck finding "чорт" in one of those.

nope.
напиться до чёртиков=kill the bottle

как чертики, появляются и исчезают герои
===
it is a reference to the phrase "как чертик из табакерки"
which means to appear suddenly
