Doh! I should have thought of asking here earlier.

I want to get Aabby Lingvo on my laptop.

Could someone please point me to a free, downloadable version of Aabby Lingvo, or another Russian-English dictionary that works as well?

I'm familiar with the dozens of onine Russian-English dictionaries. I need an offline dictionary.

Yes, it has to be downloadable. I replaced my CD drive with a second battery, and while the CD drive was uninstalled, someone mistook it for theirs and walked off with it.

"в глаза" is "to her face", indeed, but how on Earth did you get "Mitra"? мымра is an extremely ugly and often bad-tempered woman.

It hardly makes sense to call your boss names to her face, even if she is a mymra (or maybe especially if she is)

For the record... "to her face" means exactly the opposite from "behind her back"

"Behind her back" makes more sense.

"mыmpa"... I mistook at first, the m and t... I make this mistake quite a lot, then remembered how I'd heard the word and fixed it.

P.S. Your understanding of Russian is good enough, at least you have not made any major mistakes, but your translation does not sound quite English. You are too closely following the structure of Russian phrase, and this never works in translation. Take a sentence, understand it and think how would you say the same thing in English. That's the only way in translation that works.

I agree with everything except for your interpretation of this particular sentence:

Она знает дело, которым руководит.

It does not mean "she knows HER business" but exactly what it says: she knows the trade she is managing, and that is not to be taken for granted because at this time administrators were often promoted upon their ideological merits and standing with the Party, so you could have had the institute headed by someone who had not the slightest idea about statistics.

As far as i know you can download an offline version of multitran from www.multitran.ru. This is one of the best (if not the best) online dictionaries; however, i haven't tried the offline version of it.
