just a few questions
Jan. 29th, 2006 10:52 amI know that it's silly to try to translate English phrases into Russian, so I'm now wondering if anyone knows the Russian equivalent (note, not exact word-for-word translation) of the following phrases:
Why even bother? -
Why do I even bother? -
(Meaning, "Why do I even bother to talk/discuss this subject with you?")
to be comfortable with one's own sexual orientation -
(As in the following sentence: "Your extreme hatred of gay people, causes me to wonder if you are comfortable with your own sexual orientation.")
NOTE: I have no "agenda" in this community. Just looking for help with my Russian. So, please no nasty comments.

Я не собираюсь это обсуждать с тобой
С какой стати я буду это с тобой обсуждать?

"comfortable with one's own sexual orientation" ~
"(вполне) удовлетворен(а) своей сексуальной ориентацией"
More often this is used in Russian in negative contruction, as in "неудовлетворенность своей сексуальной ориентацией".
Thus, your sample sentence:
"Your extreme hatred of gay people, causes me to wonder if you are comfortable with your own sexual orientation"
should be better translated like this:
"Ваша (твоя) ненависть к гомосексуалистам заставляет меня задуматься - может, вы (ты) не удовлетворены(-рён) своей собственной сексуальной ориентацией?"
Note that "ненависть" ("hatred") usually doesn't require any strengthening modifier in Russian. It denotes quite extreme power of dislike by itself.

Date: 2006-01-29 07:30 pm (UTC)But, yeah, on my own page, I do have opinions. It was interesting having a huge discussion/fight with people on someone else's journal. Usually, when I have discussions (even about something controversial) it's on my journal, where everyone *likes* me:)

Alas, the real life is not like that.
It's too comforting (and distorting judgements) to argue only in friendly circles. In life, issues are often argued upon in hostile (intellectually, emotionally, morally) environments. Learn to argue there :)

I don't see how two parts of your sentence are related. First, I am not homophobic. Second, I do not see any compelling reasons to discontinue the practice of commenting whatever I see fit to comment.

Вы так ненавидите гомосексуалистов - это наводит на мысль, что вы подсознательно неуверены в собственной сексуальной ориентации.

What you offer is a nice editor's work, but not an exact translation (as far as a translation may be exact at all.) There was nothing about subconsciousness or being subconsciousnessly not sure in something, as far as I could see.
