Очень важный вопрос:
Who here has taken the TRKI (Test of Russian as a Foreign Language)?
There are four tests you can take, which are recognized by the Russian Ministery of Education.
The TRKI-1 is required for entrance into a Russian university. Apparently it measures for an intermediate level of competence, but the definition of "intermediate" is highly arbitrary. I'm going to St. Petersburg this summer for 6 weeks, and I'd like to take the TRKI-1 there at the end of my stay. Basically, I want/need/MUST pass this test! I'm not sure if they administer TRKI tests anywhere but Russia (do they?) so this may be my only chance before college.
Any insight?
Thanks,
Aimee

извините, не удержался -- офигеть просто, первый раз в жизни слышу, что в России уже появились стандартизированные тесты языка. И в первый раз в жизни вижу американца/ку, оказавшегося/уюся по другую сторону барьера TOEFL :)

If you make sense of all the above without any problems, you should be good to go -- I did not edit it in any way from rather colloquial Russian.

this may be of help although I bet you've already seen it: http://www.spbu.ru/Education/Centers/testing_center/cttest.html

From what I got at website of the Ministry of Education of Russia, the idea of the program is that you can only take this in Russia, in one of 41 designated universities. There are also three centers in Italy mentioned at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. So if you need this, your best chance is to go to Russia.

TOEFL is easy if you've been preparing for GRE. What happened to me is that when I was getting ready to go to a grad school in the US, I registered for TOEFL and GRE to be taken some time in November, say 15th and 23rd. On 13th, I found out that TOEFL was on 15th, and GRE on 23rd, contrary to what I was thinking -- and I put all my prep time for GRE. I still got well above the passing point on TOEFL without any hassle.

If you are just starting college this is not very relevant for you though :)

I have not seen TRKI, so I cannot get any opinion on it. Neither can I give an opinion on how difficult Russian is -- although I can see some of the battle between English and Russian in my kid's head (he is in kindergarten, after having spent 4 years in the US).

In my University, here in Italy, you can take it. There is a session once a year. It's adviced to take it after a couple of years of studying Russian at the University. There are several books for practising... it doesn't look too difficult.

About the test

I took the Level 2 test while I was there and passed. The test wasn't too hard, but I had to take it pretty much without studying because I only had a couple days notice and no study guides.

There are a lot of fill-in-the-blank multiple-choice questions which test grammar and vocabulary (the correct declension/conjugation of words, the correct tense, the correct word choice, etc.). There are a couple sections in which you have to write letters. (For mine, there was one that was a letter to the son of a friend who is considering going into the same industry I work in, and the other was a letter to a university concerning their exchange students holiday travel.) There are a couple listening sections (listen to a conversation on tape and answer questions) and a section with a movie clip. (Both of the last two are oral questions and answers, not written.)

Most important - some parts of the test you are allowed to use your dictionary, so take a good one with you!

No problem. :)

And practicing grammar certainly never hurts. :)
