I´m very much a beginner with Russian, and I wanted to say ´but the new CD is great, I love it´. This is what I concocted:

Но, компакт-диск новий хорошо, я люблю его.

Is that some sort of correct?

1. I used the pronoun 'этот' (this) like an equivalent of article 'the'.
2. We never say 'я люблю' relating to any object. We love only creatures.

хорошо is adverb and it means "it is great". "Great" as adjective means хороший.

Argh! I always mess up with adverbs and adjectives... I do actually know the difference, but I just can't get it right most of the time. Thanks for correcting me, hopefully I will learn someday! :)

just remember about -o for adverbs (хорошо, тепло, страшно) and about ий/ый for adjectives (хороший, теплый, страшный) (it is for masculine gender, don't forget about ая/яя for feminine and ое/ее for neuter). It is easy, good luck!

...Many adverbs also end with "-е".

Maybe what you wanted to use was a short adjective, which looks somewhat like an adverb. E.g., "этот компакт-диск хорош" is ok.

We often omit "компакт" and use simply "диск" for CD.

My version: "а новый диск мне очень нравится (= I love it), он просто великолепен (= is great)"

But to get not a lineal but an idiomatic translation it's better to give the whole context.

We do love to do something. I'm sorry. We also love food, drinks and animals, but we don't love books, CDs, etc.
Right: Я люблю читать книги.
Wrong: Я люблю эту книгу.
