I've always been interested in the Russian language. While I'm not officially learning it right now, I plan on it as soon as I graduate from my junior college. I just wanted to know -- what attracted y'all to this language?

I've just always been interested in the culture. I grew up with Russian fairytales, and now here I am, on the internet researching the architecture of Vladimir. I find the language to be very interesting, it's fun to pronounce, and challenging. There you go.

I saw a movie with a lot of spoken Russian in it and fell in love with the way it sounds. Now I'm also interested in speaking it and reading it (obviously!!) and also the culture and stuff. I've made some really good friends too, while learning the language, Russian friends, I couldn't live without them. =) And yes, I also like the challenge.

The culture and music always attracted me when I was little. Although I have to admit my love for the music started when I was 5 and played Tetris. When I got older my interest in learning the language was renewed by watching movies (Burnt By The Sun, etc.) and enjoying simply the way russian "sounded." It finally came down to learning it on a whim by a friend of my mother's deciding to start an informal class.

I became interested in Russian though history mostly. I'm interested in the Byzantine empire, which introduced me to Eastern European history. Now I'm a Slav-o-phile and it's not that I necessarily prefer Russian over the other slavic languages, Russian is just the easiest to learn in terms of resources easily available.

I lived in Germany on a student exchange with a Czech family who took me to the Czech Republic which was my first introduction to Eastern European culture. My school has a decent Slavonic Studies department and offers Polish and Czech linguistics but only Russian language as a major.

As my professor describes me, I'm a "Руссофилька." --Assuming that's spelled correctly... And that it's a legitimate word. :-D

I first started learning it because my class was going to visit an orphanage in Kaliningrad that our school has helped for the last 8 years (this year, our class raised the equivalent of about $11 000), and were going to homestay with local families. So, I started learning git out of convenience, and have continued because I find the language simply beautiful.
