hello ! i've been studying russian in college for about a year. i would like to know if anyone else can tell me the correct form of word to use if you're getting a tattoo in russian. usually in english, the words i want would be simply "peace pain regret". in russian, is it "мир боль сожаление" ?

You're right, but perhaps "мир боль печаль" would be a little better.
"сожаление" is also correct.

Yes, "печаль" is better than "сожаление". "Cожаление" has a meaning of feeling sorry -- somewhat formal and overused, while "печаль" means a grief or sorrow.

Another thing. In Russian, the word "мир" bears two meanings: 1) world and 2) peace. So there is some ambiguity. If you do not want this ambiguity you may use some other words, like покой or спокойствие. but they also bear some auxiliary meaning.

i was aware of that. :) i do prefer the ambiguity with that word, as i think it relates more to what i was going for.

But to answer your question,
"regret" may also be translated as "скорбь" (exporession of grief, mourning) or "раскаяние" (remorse)...

in which case, make it мир боль раскаянье for a better rhythm to the phrase

(-ье for -ие is a poetism which can go with virtually any word of this paradigm, like o'er- for over- in English, but not actually obsolete)

imho, сожаленье conveys no direct emotional sense, it's too hazy a concept

if you go for сож. after all, may I suggest "мир сожаление боль", a dactylic trimeter

not many people notice it but practically all Russian slogans since the Soviet times are single lines of verse, say, the iambic "НАРОД И ПАРТИЯ ЕДИНЫ" (the People and the Party are one), or the choreic "СПИЧКИ ДЕТЯМ НЕ ИГРУШКА" (matches aren't a children's toy)... so it's something that's irreversibly in the people's mindset.
