It's a question both to the learners and teachers of Russian. A friend asked me to teach him Russian (I'm an English teacher). I tried looking through some of the books recommended on the web, but most didn't seem quite appealing. So what's your personal preference? What books did you use / are you using to learn and teach? Thanks.

In order to use most of the Russian textbooks, you should have a qualified teacher of РКИ because textbooks usually do not contain explanations

I would start with Russian cartoons and movies

One could easily find subtitles and scripts for these.

I would not bring my girl- or boy-friend into a class room, I guess there are better ways to teach when there is a chance to go unofficially.

Of course, there will be a need in text books, grammar exercises, etc, however I would start with listening to natives actors - these are good in pronunciation.

Most university programs in the US use Golosa. http://www2.gwu.edu/~slavic/golosa/

I've never taught Russian, but did take it in college.

However, this series right here:

Is the book/books I used for I believe the first two years. I'm not sure how they compare to others, however I seemed to do just fine with them (plus they come with a workbook that goes along with the sections, as well as an audio and video cd to help with listening. Plus this is the newer version (my very first semester's book was the old version, and you could tell from the dvd that is was filmed in the mid-90s. So a bit, uh, outdated should I say? Haha.), so it may have an upgrade to how it handles explanations.
