Hello everyone.

I came across a word today that I do not have any reference for, and hoped someone could assist.

The word is пофигизм; possibly пофиги.

The context of the sentence that I saw this word was, "Солнце, воздух, пофигизм укрепляют организм!" Sunshine, fresh air, and (blank) strengthens the body.

Thank you,

пофигизм is a "who-cares" attitude, "whateverism"

"Пофигу" (ударение на "о") - все равно, безразлично. Сленговые аналоги: наплевать, начихать, однохуйственно, не ебёт, фиолетово, по барабану.

Yeah, you really should nail this one, Russians love it. ;) Basically, it's a carefree, easy-going attitude, perhaps what Pumbaa and Timon in Disney's The Lion King called Hakuna Matata - No worries. "Мне пофиг(у)" - "I don't care". "Да пофиг(у)!" - "Who cares!" "Он относится ко всему со здоровой дозой пофигизма" - "He takes everything with a healthy dose of carefree".

Mmm.... Carefree is not the same as not to care. A child is carefree = беззаботный.

Still close enough, I think. I can't find a more adequate translation. Carefree + indifference = пофигизм?

Care = забота. I don't care = меня (это) не заботит = меня (это) не волнует =мне пофиг.

Carefree = свободный от забот = беззаботный

Пофигизм does imply свобода от забот. It's not the aggressive English "who cares?" which to me seems more linked to rejecting than to maintaining positive attitude.

пофигизм = not-giving-a-shit

Yeah, this might be the closest translation. Thanks.

Slightly cynical indifference :-) Seriously, the first suggestion is correct: мне пофиг = I don't care.

The phrase that you quote is a modification of a famous phrase from an old Soviet song that everyone used to know http://ostrovok.de/old/songs/movie/mov-024.htm promoting healthy lifestyle.

Apparently there is a new song out there with the words you quote http://get-tune.net/?a=music&q=%F1%EE%EB%ED%F6%E5+%E2%EE%E7%E4%F3%F5+%E8+%E2%EE%E4%E0

The original version:
"Солнце, воздух, ананизм
укрепляют организм!

Брата Иры звали Онан, и, соответственно, эту манипуляцию называют онанизмом.

I would name it I-dont-care-ism. A fig (фига) is an equivalent of finger salute.

There's actually an English idiom "I don't care a fig" or "I don't give a fig", which, I strongly suspect, is related to the word in question.

Yep, that shold be it

I would say you are right, since there is a much stronger expression in Russian, where the "фига" (a finger-figure's related word) is replaced with an obscene word, which I don't like mentioning here.
