Dear All,

I'm trying to better understand another line from Woe from Wit. It is in this section:

Ну! люди в здешней стороне!
Она к нему, а он ко мне,
А я...одна лишь я любви до смерти трушу.-
А как не полюбить буфетчика Петрушу! 

The unusual word here is трушу. How would you translate that line? Is it just "I alone FEAR love to death"? Is it about being afraid of love? Thanks!

Yes, трУшу is I am afraid, from трУсить--to be afraid. Трус--a coward.

I can only guess, but being a young slave woman is a good reason to be afraid of love. Sex at the time meant children for a woman, and she could not marry without a permission from her master. A master could (and frequently, they did) order her to marry whomever of his slaves he pleased.

That ("трУшу") means "I am scared":
- "боюсь до смерти", то есть "смертельно боюсь",
- "испытываю такой страх, что могу от него умереть".

This "трУшу" is for the verb "трУсить" and the noun "трус".

Please be aware, there is also the word "трушУ" for the verb "трусИть" (meaning to shake - to shake a bag; to shake a tree, e.g. to shake an apple tree trying to shake apples down)

No, in fact. The meaning "to shake" of the verb "трусИть" has a very ukrainian taste.

The correct russian for "трусИть" means something like to run slowly, kind of jogging.

There is a saying in Russian: "люблЮ как дУшу, трушУ как грУшу".

The expression "трусИть верхОм" is reflecting the regular up-down-up-down movement of something. There are expressions "вытрусить мешок", "вытрусить половик", etc.

"Бояться до смерти" is idiom meaning "to be extremely afraid", and yes, Lisa says that she is afraid to fall in love.

Yes, the translation is right. However, there's another thing here. "Трушу" can be used here purely for rhyme purposes, but it can also imply 'i'm being cowardly', i. e. a negative connotation.

First of all, Griboedov's text feels modern enough for a modern Russian native speaker. The facts of that life may be forgotten and the references pass unnoticed, but not the language.

Besides, in modern Russian the verb "трУсить" tends to be intransitive, i.e. it doesn't require a direct object. In Griboedov's text it is transitive (трушу чего? - любви), just as its synonym "бояться".

You are right. Liza implies she is too shy to love, while Sofia and Molchalin are not.

By the way, there are three love trianges in the comedy:
1. Chatsky-Sofia-Molchalin,
2. Sofia-Molchalin-Liza,
3. Molchalin-Liza-Petrusha.
