What is the etymology of the phrase "бог весть"? Is it any different than "вог знает"?

"Бог весть" means "only God knows", nobody without God.

could be. but there is another meaning:
"да ты и сам не бог весть что" = Оценочная характеристика чего-либо или кого-либо как не очень хорошего, не очень значительного, не очень важного.

From a dictionary:
бог весть = неизвестно, никто не знает. = Бог <его> знает.

Чему научаются наши дети?.. Болтать Бог весть на каком наречии. (А. Пушкин.)

The word "весть" in this phrase is the grammatical third person singular form from verb "ведать" = "знать", "to know"

The difference is that весть (as verb in first person singular, present tense of ведать) is an old form and not used in modern language outside this expression. So, Бог весть sounds more archaic than Бог знает.

"весть" = colloquial "ведать" (i.e. "знать")
"Бог весть" is a vernacular and dated idiom, while "Бог знает" is more up-to-date and in wide use.
