I've seen the word всячески translated in different ways. Is its main meaning "variously" or "many times"?

variously, in many ways, maybe implying getting out of one's way, doing difficult or unusual things to achieve something.

It means "variously". But I doubt that - in any language - one could do something "variously" without doing it more than one time. :)

When I was a college student (1980s,) it was in relatively wide slang use, mostly with sexual connotations; to say that a couple loved each other всячески meant that they were having frequent and intense sexual intercourses anywhere they could :)

It can also mean "totally" when you try to assure people of something. "Я вас всячески поддерживаю" = "I totally support you". But the literal meaning is still "variously", so this phrase sounds like some weird cliche. Can be used to mimic or mock official speech style.
