Turning smth upside-down

Hello all,

How do I say, "you turn your handbag upside-down and shake it"? As in, what you do when you lose your keys or phone.

I'm finding lots of idioms, but I suspect they're a little too anthropomorphic in nature. Would it be 'перевернуть сумку вверх дном'? And which word for shake?

On the simpler side, I'd go with "перевернуть сумку и вытряхнуть её". To shake smth. empty is exactly "вытряхнуть" ("вытряхивать" for imperfective form.)

Перевернуть сумку is unnecessary. Simply вытряхнуть сумку would be absolutely sufficient in Russian to describe the action in question.

Literally that action can de described as вытряхни всё из сумки."Перевернуть вверх дном" as an idiom is used for objects of larger scale: в поисках телефона я перевернул вверх дном всю комнату.

'перевернуть сумку вверх дном' - верно
"я обыскала всю сумку", "перетряхнула всю сумку" - употребляется в разговорном.
"я свою сумку чуть-ли не на изнанку вывернула" - в разговорном допустимо и употребляется.

I wonder what do you mean by anthropomorphic idioms. Is it вверх ногами, or вниз головой? Perhaps other body parts are mentioned?

Перевернуть вверх дном is valid but a bit too verbose, people usually say just перевернуть and omit вверх дном, it's implicit.

A page has its header and footer, the same in pretty normal in Russian - one of the Russian words for "header" or "headline" is "заголовок", another one (for a document title) is "шапка".

So, that is pretty normal to say: "Ты держишь книгу (картину, газету) вверх ногами." -- "You are holding the picture upside down."

I often heard that in my early childhood. They tried to correct my habit to hold my books upside down. There was a reason for that - I learned to read sitting across the table and listening to older boys and girls reading aloud for me.
