Could be "the workers' thrust", "the workers' effort", something like this
also reminds me of ударники (the shock-workers)

Depends on context. I suspect, the book may be about some revolutionary activities of workers, or about shock-workers. Probably "удар" here means "быть в ударе", to be at his best, or it's not a metaphor, and the book is about smiths or other occupations using strikes in their work.
