Бегемот, like the cat in Мастер и Маргарита? That would be a really cool name, but perhaps better for a big, fat black cat with connotations to the devil. ;)
Прочитал на форуме в теме "Смешные клички домашних животных": "У знакомых кота зовут Кастрюлька. На мое удивленное "почему?" они ответили: "Так кастрированный же..." (c)bash.org.ru
I'm not sure about that. It just could be that cats react to such sounds more actively because those sounds are associated with danger in the wild world (e.g. snakes). If you have a cat, try crunching some branches nearby (better when initially unseen) and notice the reaction. It's said that many creatures naturally react to the crunching sounds as that may be an indication of a big predator approaching.
My cat was called Дымка because of whitish grey fur. When I was a child we also had a cat called Марсик.
I think names that have to do with the cat's colour are quite common: Рыжик, Ночка, Беляночка (Белянка, Белочка, Белка), Снежинка, Чернушка, although I think Белочка, Чернушка are more common for village cats, not for those whose owners live in the city.
