Васька is quite common.

It's also very convenient name, if accident happens, can be changed to Василиса.

Never heard about a cat named Нюра, neither real, nor make-believe. Nothing personal.

No! Not at all! Except for a few "special" names, but they're always diminutive: Васька, Машка, Бобик (dog), Кеша (parrot).

Прочитал на форуме в теме "Смешные клички домашних животных":
"У знакомых кота зовут Кастрюлька. На мое удивленное "почему?" они ответили: "Так кастрированный же..."

1. Exactly!
2. Just a quick search for "имя для кошки" (http://yandex.ru/yandsearch?text=%D0%B8%D0%BC%D1%8F%20%D0%B4%D0%BB%D1%8F%20%D0%BA%D0%BE%D1%88%D0%BA%D0%B8)

We've named our cat Пушок (Fluffy). The name was changed to Пушка when we discovered that the kitten is female :)
