1. How productive are the processes by which nouns become adjectives and verbs become nouns? For example, there are correspondances such as значить--значение, повторить--повторение, изменить--изменение, and so on. If I were to propose a fake verb like зафренить, would you expect the corresponding noun to be зафренение?

2. If you saw a sentence like Я писала хорошему длинное письмо, would you be able to interpret it (however awkwardly) as "I sent a long letter to the good (one)."? For example, would it work in the following dialogue?

--Ты плохому студенту звонилa?
--Нет, я писала хорошему длинное письмо.

2's OK since there's enough context for хороший.

This one is fine, it could be exactly what you came up with.
I'm just pointing out that other changes in the words may be necessary.
So, for instance, when we're saying зафрендить, a quite similar thing to your invention (derived from "friend" and means to add as a friend), then it becomes either зафрендивание or зафренживание (like with опереДить->опереЖение). So, we have the ив suffix (which is not always there) and possibly a consonant alteration.

Oh, yes, I'm aware of all those frustratingly creative types of derivations Russian has. (Actually, I came up with зафренить because I saw зафрендить somewhere, but I wanted to leave out the consonant alternation, so I used н, which is much safer than д.) Thank you very much for confirming that my invention is at least possible. It is extremely helpful.

зафренДить is a calque from English
so this word will not accept so easily any Russian type of change
words such as "зафренджение" sound too aukward
you can't not usually make the same derivations with calques as you can with originally Russian words

Indeed, when I was thinking about the topic I came up with the noun френжение, which I find more naturally sounding than зафренживание. The pattern seems to be pretty common (e.g. забродить - брожение, заблудить - блуждание, and so on), although not universally applicable I guess.

Speaking about the second author's question, this would be perfectly understandable:
--Ты плохому студенту звонилa?
-- Нет, я хорошему длинное письмо писала

What I did is just put the words in the natural order for the kind of meaning they should convey. Can't really explain it more scientifically or syntactically reasoned.

Окрашивание is derived from окрашивать; there is a noun крашение I use to see on one sign.

2.There are other ways (that is, other suffixes) to derive nouns from verbs:

-б(а): дружить - дружба, ворожить - ворожба
-к(а): рубить - рубка, мыть - мойка
-ёж: грабить - грабёж...

Zero affixation is also quite productive way, and the word зафренд (http://blogs.yandex.ru/search.xml?text=%D0%B7%D0%B0%D1%84%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B4) is much used.

1. Зафрендивание, or rather зафренживание, :-) sounds more natural, and both are somewhat widely used in Russian-speaking part of livejournal.

2. Yes, absolutely.
