Железная леди is, ultimately, just one woman: namely, Baroness Margaret Thatcher. For all the rest, железная женщина (neutral,) железная баба (rough) and just бой-баба (very colloquial, but also very expressive) work better.
Margaret Thatcher was the first woman to be called железная леди, that's true. Now this is a common expression to describe any woman of strong character. Just some random references:
I think it would make sense to add this comment along with your expression from the very beginning. While the original poster could probably guess the connotation, there's still a good chance of misunderstanding, insulting somebody and feeling embarrassed.
