It was nice talking to you

A friend said he wanted to run something by me that his Russian friend taught him. It was supposed to mean "It was nice talking to you." I not only didn't understand the words, but couldn't recognize any part of the phrase. I'm guessing it was a heavily colloquial phrase, or else he was just dead wrong on remembering it.

I think I would just say ochen priyatno (sorry, my Russian keyboard isn't working) in that case. Would I be right?

And what could his phrase might have been?

Очень приятно is rather something you say when you meet a person for the first time, e.g.:
- Меня зовут Вася.
- А я Маша. Очень приятно.

Then, after they talked for a while and it's time to leave, Вася could say, for example:
- Приятно было познакомиться.

As to your friend's phrase, I have no idea. Could you remember at least some of it?

What if you're not meeting them for the first time? Maybe old friends get together, catch up, and are saying goodbye for the evening.

Then you don't say очень приятно. This is reserved for the first time you see the person. For saying goodbye, I believe there is no set phrase. I normally say Спасибо за компанию.
