you mean "ponyatie", понятие, I think :)
there's a big difference between those two. понимание means understanding. понятие means concept.

In prison slang that is pretty commonly used not only in prisons "понятие" means collection of unwritten prison laws. Basically this is some form of common sense.

is a notion, an idea, a concept, etc.
As for
понимание
, primarily, it means understanding, comprehension.

Yea, "ponyatnie" was just a typo -- ponyatie of course. Thanks for the replies, all clear now
