I'm confused about how numbers decline. Like, in the following sentence, I am trying to say "They had two sons".

У их были двя сынами

If someone could help me with the pattern of declensions for the numbers, that would be awesome.

два отцы is incorrect. Correct version would be "два отца", it's genitive case.

Inflections of 5-20 in different cases:
Именительный (кто, что?): пять ложек, четырнадцать кошек
Родительный (кого, чего?): пяти ложек, четырнадцати кошек
Дательный (кому, чему?): пяти ложкам, четырнадцати кошкам
Винительный (кого, что?): пять ложек, четырнадцать кошек
Творительный (кем, чем?): пятью ложками, четырнадцатью кошками
Предложный (о ком, о чём?): о пяти ложках, о четырнадцати кошках

Where are excercises in Russian-as-a-native-language textbooks, e.g.:
Прибыл поезд с 287 экскурсантами. --> Прибыл поезд с двумястами восемьюдесятью семью экскурсантами.
- and these excersises are considered to be relatively hard even for native speakers.

We're loosing some rules right now. I mean, some time ago it was correct to say "У вас нет двух рублей?". But now it is very common to say "У вас нет два рубля?"
It is absolutely incorrect but widespreaded. I have the feeling that last construction will win soon and first one will be claimed obsolete.
