Declined numbers

I'm confused about how numbers decline. Like, in the following sentence, I am trying to say "They had two sons".

У их были двя сынами

If someone could help me with the pattern of declensions for the numbers, that would be awesome.

not sure what you mean by у instead of и, but 2, 3 and 4 are indeed declined slightly different than other numbers:

два, три, четыре сына - пять сыновей
две, три, четыре женщины - пять женщин
два привидения - пять привидений

however in cases other than nominative this difference may disappear:

двум женщинам, пяти женщинам
двух сыновей, пять сыновей
о двух привидениях, о пяти привидениях

For the presented case it is also possible to say "У них было двое сыновей", as the object is animate. And then decline as follows:
У них было двое сыновей
Им не хватало двоих сыновей
Они оставили наследство двоим сыновьям
Они гордили двоими сыновьями
Они не могли перестать говорить о своих двоих сыновьях

"двое сыновей" has nothing to do with being animate. For example, you cannot say двое дочерей, even though the daughters are animate as well.

It does have a little to do with being animate.

Collective numerals can be used with nouns that are inherently plural, regardless of animacy (e.g. сутки and дети).
Двое суток (two 24-hour periods) and трое детей (three children) - Accepted

And they can be used with animate masculine nouns (e.g. парень and друг).
Четверо парней (four guys) and двое друзей (two friends) - Accepted

However, to my knowledge, inanimate masculine nouns (e.g. ящик and нож) are not used with collective numerals.
Трое ящиков (three boxes/drawers) and двое ножей (two knives) - Not Accepted

So, the possibility of the phrase двое сыновей must be, in part, due to the animacy of the noun сын. Otherwise, inanimate masculine nouns should be combinable with collective numerals, yet they are not.

No, that's not it: those are collective numerals (собирательные числительные): пять сыновей/пятеро сыновей. It has to be a group of people, male or mixed (семеро сыновей but семь дочерей).

Sons are in nominative here, so maybe this is not a very good example; anyway the Russian for this is У них были два сына.

Here's how you decline numbers:

Nominative: один (одна, одно), два, три, четыре, двадцать, сорок, сто etc. (like in the dictionary)
Genitive: одного (одной, одного), двух, трех, четырех, пяти, двадцати, сорока, ста
Dative: одному (одной, одному), двум, трем, четырем, пяти, двадцати, сорока, ста
Accusative: одного человека (animate)/один стол (inanimate) (одну, одно), двух(animate)/два(inanimate), трех(animate)/три(inanimate), четырех(animate)/четыре(inanimate), пять, двадцать, сорок, сто
Instrumental: одним (одной, одним), двумя, пятью, двадцатью, сорока
Prepositional: об одном (одной, одном), о двух, о двадцати, о сорока, о ста

If a number consists of several words, each of them is declined separately:
к двадцати двум одноклассникам, с двадцатью двумя одноклассниками


that's a long list actually, but I hope you get the idea. There are subtleties depending on whether the noun is animate or unanimate, and also the declension of the noun itself can be tricky (e.g. два часа but пять часов).

два отцы is incorrect. Correct version would be "два отца", it's genitive case.

Inflections of 5-20 in different cases:
Именительный (кто, что?): пять ложек, четырнадцать кошек
Родительный (кого, чего?): пяти ложек, четырнадцати кошек
Дательный (кому, чему?): пяти ложкам, четырнадцати кошкам
Винительный (кого, что?): пять ложек, четырнадцать кошек
Творительный (кем, чем?): пятью ложками, четырнадцатью кошками
Предложный (о ком, о чём?): о пяти ложках, о четырнадцати кошках

Where are excercises in Russian-as-a-native-language textbooks, e.g.:
Прибыл поезд с 287 экскурсантами. --> Прибыл поезд с двумястами восемьюдесятью семью экскурсантами.
- and these excersises are considered to be relatively hard even for native speakers.

We're loosing some rules right now. I mean, some time ago it was correct to say "У вас нет двух рублей?". But now it is very common to say "У вас нет два рубля?"
It is absolutely incorrect but widespreaded. I have the feeling that last construction will win soon and first one will be claimed obsolete.
