Two questions for the esteemed community: 

1. What is the difference between переход and переулок?

2. How do you say "to brag" and "to show off"? For instance, something like:  "I don't  mean to brag, but I think I'm a good teacher."

They are totally different: "переход" has many different meanings, but relating to the roads it means pedestrian crossing. "Переулок" is a "side-street" or "lane" - the relatively narrow and/or short street, which starts either at a bigger street or at a square.

What is the thing called which runs underground in order to cross big streets? Sometimes these are connected to metro stations, but sometimes they are simply underground crosswalks without metros.

"Переулок" is a small street. More precisely it is "a short street between two long streets, going perpendicular to them". Nowadays, this word is mostly used in addresses. There can be an addresses like "г.Новосибирск, 2-й Часовой переулок, дом 4".

"Переход" can mean "passage, crossing, transfer, transition etc", depending on context.

You can use the verb "хвастаться". "I don't mean to brag, but I think I'm a good teacher." -> "Не хочу хвастаться, но думаю я хороший учитель".

Ok thanks. Is there an equivalent for "to show off" that would also fit this situation? I remember learning a verb for "to show off" but can't recall it.

to show off - рисоваться, выделываться, выпендриваться (slang) but they don't fit this situation

they are suitable for sentences like "Next time when you feel like showing off, don't!"

рисоваться - bookish, and almost out of use.
выделыватьсяб выпендриваться - slang, not used in any kind of official sitiation
выёбываться - same as above, but rude and obscene
