What, if any, is the difference between 'что ты думаешь?' and 'как ты думаешь?'?


for example:


if one wants to ask 'он хороший?' and then ask what someone else thinks, would it be correct to ask 'что ты думаешь?' or more correct to ask 'как ты думаешь?'

another case. 'я хочу играть сегодня'... and then to ask someone's opinion about that, would it be more correct to ask 'что ты думаешь (об этом)?

in the first case "как ты думаешь" is correct. but in the second case you better say "что ты об этом думаешь" or even "что скажешь" (if you want to know the person's opinion about your plans it would sound more natural).

well; you can. but in that case you can get a very detailed description of person's thoughts on the subject :) I suggest though you use "что скажешь?" in both cases, 'casuse "что ты об этом думаешь?" strictly resembles a dialog with some psychologist. "do you want to discuss it?" :)

In first case it's better to say 'что ты о нём думаешь?'. But both your option is applicable.

In second case it's better to say 'как ты на это смотришь'.

Though, both your sentence are ill and may be used only while omission in effect.

This is one of illogical places. "Как ты думаешь?" is used where the question is about the opinion of the one who is asked. Eg: "как ты думаешь, дождь пойдёт?" means "do you think it's gonna rain?" In contrast, "что ты думаешь?" is ordinarily a rhetorical question used to express a (mild) disbelief in naivety, so that "что ты думаешь, дождь пойдёт?" is (ordinarily) the same as "что ж ты думаешь, дождь пойдёт, что ли?" (sort of "you don't really think it's gonna rain, do you?") I say "ordinarily" because once in a while the "что" question is used in the manner of the "как" question.

Now, "что ты думаешь об этом" is logical, that is, "что" is used literally here. It's not a set phrase (or whatever it is called).

You answered your question - "как ты думаешь" is used as is, but "что ты думаешь" requires "о чем-то", "об этом" etc.

Well, the difference is simple:
"что ты думаешь" is almost always (but maybe some very obscure cases) used with a preposition "что ты думаешь о...", "что ты думаешь про...", etc.
"как ты думаешь?" is a complete sentence, it is never used with a preposition.

Therefore, the correct usage is
"Как ты думаешь, он хороший?" but "Что ты думаешь о нём?"

Concerning the second question:
1. It is better to use a verb "поиграть" instead of "играть" in this context ("играть" has a trace of continuous tense in it).
2. Accordingly, you may say
"Что ты думаешь о том, чтобы поиграть сегодня?" but it sounds somewhat formal.
3. More natural would be to say
"Я хочу (or хотел бы) сегодня поиграть, а ты?"
"Как ты смотришь на то, чтобы сегодня поиграть?"
