Translation question

I'm translating an opus on how blind people can create art, and the techniques and tools needed to do so. The bit in italics is what is giving me the most trouble.

Надев рамку на данную конструкцию и подтянув материю за выступающие за рамку края, получите в рамке туго натянутое полотно, покоящееся на основе из пластилина.

This is my best guess:
Having placed the frame on the construction in question and stretched the material over the protruding edges behind the frame, in the frame you get a tautly pulled canvas, which rests on the foundation of plasticine.

Am I close?

The point of the marked words is simple: one has to take the edges protruding over the frame and pull them.


(Two different meanings of "за" in the same phrase. Quite a difficult task, I'd say)

Hmm... But the frame is placed on top of the material, so I can't quite picture how that works. So one should pull the edges protruding from under the frame?

The confusing part is figuring out whose края we're talking about. They are the material's, not the frame's. I had to re-read this sentence twice but it seems pretty clear: "By placing the frame over the construction in question and pulling on the edges of the fabric that protrude beyond the frame you will end up with a tautly mounted canvas resting on a plasticine foundation." "За" is indeed used in two completely different meanings here: "on" (as in "pulling on") and "beyond, outside". Neat!

Argh, that was horrible English! Let's try again: "By placing the frame over the construction in question and pulling on the edges of the fabric protruding beyond the frame you will get a tautly mounted canvas resting on a plasticine foundation." If I were an editor, I'd break this sentence apart in two or three smaller ones. Anyway, there you have it.
