Question

I have a question regarding the use of Russian in informal writings; it relates to spelling. I've been reading lots of Russian language LJ's and noticed that some people spell words not as they should be spelt, though this is done on purpose.
For example, фторник instead of вторник, вотка instead of водка, умнайо instead of умное, etc. etc. Also alot of swear words in particular are written like that, but I won't mention them here obviously.
Mostly I think it's the younger peeps that write like that, but it doesn't make sense to me. It's not like it takes less effort to write the words like that, but it almost looks like they're writing the words how they sound.
So, someone who's in the know please explain.
Much appreciated!! :))

Those who use this particular style call themselves "подонки"?

No. They call themselves according to their style("падонкаффский" style) - "падонки". The word "подонки" is normal and has negative meaning, it's not used to name people using that style.

Thanks for the information. Was able to look up the term and gain some insight into this pheonomen. It seems that this is a somewhat jovial attempt by predominantly younger language users to reflect on and synthesise various apparently incongruent elements to form a new style of expressive, articulate a new mood and a new attitude.

Perhaps, an instance of the "youth culture" phenomenon we see almost everywhere.

Here's a recent Vedomosti article that treats the subject.

helding stupid conferences about something you can get from interner within 2-3 hours spent on googling will tell you alot about present state of our science.

this guys just act like its usual dialect. every word of kashenit/padonkofski style can be traced right to its author.

the dialect itself were not created by a bunch of ignorant kids as it might seem. There were some smart guys behind it.
