Date: 2007-01-20 11:28 pm (UTC)I doubt it be some "insightful, exciting", but I like phrases from old Russian/Soviet films (I use their in everyday life quite often), for example:
1. "А вас, Штирлиц, я попрошу остаться!"/ "I'd like to ask you, Shtirlitz, to stay!" (Семнадцать мгновений весны / Seventeen Moments of Spring). Of course, the intonation has big sense in this case. It is necessary to remember HOW Muller, chief of Gestapo, says these words to Soviet spy Shtirlitz/Isaev after official meeting.
I highly recommend to use this phrase in business ;)))
2. "Орхидеи еще не зацвели" / "Orchids are not bloom until" (Собака Баскервилей / The Hound of the Baskervilles ...with Livanov, of course). This phrase is pronouncing by slightly drunk Watson to slightly drunk Sir Henry. Maybe, it is stupidly, but the reply is very funny and it is real hit in Russia.
I recommend to use this phrase in party -- you will be understood by all, no doubt!
Perhaps, I shall compile short list of film phrases in near future. These famous phrases are peculiar code which is clear for all citizens of Russia/ex-USSR.

This phrase, as I understand, is fragment of lirical waffle by Ms. Steplton. She says this enigmatic phrase to Watson during their first meeting near the moors (lady mistakes Doctor for Sir Henry). ...After the visit of the Stepltons in Baskerville Hall, both gentlemen have got drunk (may say, they "лыка не вяжут"). Sir Henry asks Watson about Ms. Steplton's words again and again...

Date: 2007-01-20 11:31 pm (UTC)I've looked it up, and it says that passive past participles derived from intransitive non-terminative verbs like xodit', sidet' are unusual in the literary language (and it's impossible to derive them from terminative verbs like prijti). But I think they only denote the impersonality of an action without any expression of despair. This type of participle usage is common in a number of languages (sentences like "Now it is come to the door and knocked"). Anyway it's different from our subject. Perhaps I'll write an entry on this later.

Grammatically it's not an impersonal construction because here you've got a personal verb form ("they told me...") but semantically it is, because it does not matter who told you. But you can make this pattern grammatically impersonal as well:
мне говорено... (compare 'tebe skazano...')
But this is not common, as far as I understand.
