и по-английски. а у наших рекламщиков (и не только) мания - копировать англоязычную систему пунктуации. и в т.ч. - не брать названия компаний в кавычки.

кстати, по-русски ксерокс с маленькой буквы пишется. равно как и другие слова, когда это нарицательные существиительные.

This I noticed myself. I do the same thing, because Russian obsenities are ten times worse. That's what the problem is when I get mad. I call people the "C" word often when I'm enraged, and I use the russian word for this when I'm in school so I'm not in trouble. However, there are two Russians at my school, and if I get angry and try to explain my opinion on the person to whom I show anger, I might call them pizdy.

To make it more natural sounding in English, I'd translate it as "Of course, you know what Xerox is - it's Fax." The punctuation change and combining the sentences into one goes a long way towards making it sound more natural, which is really the point of translation. Both my Spanish and Russian teachers always stressed that point - translate ideas, not words.

That sentence reminds me of one that was in my first year Russian text in one of those simple conversations. It was: Все знают сигнал Спутника. Да, это <<бип - бип - бип>>. Literally translated it sounds really clunky - "Everybody knows the signal of Sputnik. Yes, it's BEEP BEEP BEEP." Of course, the sentence sounds funny anyways. :)

I've always been told the same thing. I don't do a lot of translating into english thought from Russian, because I HATE translation. I strive for being able to read without translating, and so far I pretty much can unless I don't know a word or I run into a verb form I've never learned (Like gerunds). In my latin class, the teacher tells me to translate literally - I never do. It always takes me a while to find the correct words...that why I don't like it. I don't even like reading latin while translation, I prefer to do it right on and see how much I can comprehend in Latin alone (Which, on my level, seems to be about 90% of what I read.)
