[identity profile] setyourhearton.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] learn_russian
Hi everyone, I'm coming in with a request.
My sister is getting a tattoo and some of the lettering will be in Russian.
I have a translation, but since tattoos are very permanent, I would like to get a confirmation.
In English it is supposed to say "Because you have to make this life liveable."
The translation I have is " Поскольку Вы должны делать эту жизнь приемлемой "
Thank you for your help!

The translation is more or less correct, but rather dull. Not catchy at all.

потому что вы должны (or ты должен) сделать эту жизнь приемлимой.

it sounds much better in english though.

1. Tattoo in a language you don't understand is a BAD idea.
2. The existing translation is not good. Don't use it - the wordplay is lost and it sounds completely empty in Russian. Like some advertisement motto or worse.
3. If you insist you can try
"Проживи живую жизнь" ("You should live a living life")
4. But I strongly suggest to follow 1.

you should give surrounding words then. can't shape a good sentence without content.

I'd go with [livejournal.com profile] arpad, especially if she's at all unsure about the translation.

My rule of thumb is, if you have to ask someone else what it means, don't get it.

This translation is completely off, don't use it.

... if she ends up getting the tattoo anyway, it'd be great if you posted an image of it here. I would so show it to one of my old professors. ;)

Why are you speaking only about "приемлемой" ? "liveable" has other meanings
i wouldn't translate "because"
****
it'd be better - ты должен сделать жизнь нормальной or сделай жизнь нормальной

+ 1 to don't go for it.
The word by word translation is long, and dull, and unimpressive.

Consider something like "иначе жизнь слишком безжизненна." ("otherwise life is too lifeless")
It preserves some idea of the original phrase and yet sounds better and plays upon words as well.

I'd suggest smth like - Я поддаюсь соблазнам, чтобы вдохнуть жизнь в наши судьбы (to breathe new life into our lives)/ чтобы жизнь была менее безжизненной (so that life seemed less liveless)/ чтобы эта жизнь была прожита не зря.(to live this life not in vain)

but as for tatoo, I'd talk your sister out of it!
