Question and a small translation request.

Hello everyone. I have a question on something I translated, and a small request. My roommate is going home to Russia next week and we are throwing her a goodbye party. I want to write something on her cake, and I attempted to translate it myself since I have been getting a little better at my Russian.

Here is what I want to say: Goodbye Alesya! We love you and we will miss you!

And here's how I translated it: До свидания Алecя! Мы любим ты и мы скучeм ты!

The verb conjugations I am not sure about I bolded. I looked in my book for the future tense (will miss) and that's what it said, but it didn't specify that verb, so I wanted to make sure. Also, is using ты proper after the verb? There is so much I don't know about the language yet. =/

Is it proper to sign the card: kpeпo цeлую, then my name: Наёми ? The textbook said it meant something akin to 'lots of love', I figured it was appropriate.


Also, can anyone do a quick translation of this poem for me? I would try it, but it would probably take me all week, and the party is on Sunday....heh.

at least it should probably be - Мы тебя любим. you might do something similar with the second ты. for that would be why ты looks awkward. about the rest/usage of любить, I can't help you as my russian is also a work-in-progress. :)

When ты is the object, you use тебя. You’d say: «Мы любим тебя и будем скучать тебя», probably.

um. basically what others have said. only with the verb "скучать" you need to use this construction: скучать по кому/чему

so. what you want is. мы любим тебя и будем по тебе скучать

"по кому" is most common.
But I heard that correct is "по ком - по чём".
Example: "Скучаем по вас". I was surprised...

Pronouns ARE inclined in Russian, the same way as nouns do, so you should use accusative in first part, and prepositional in second part, as verb "скучать" commands a preposition here: "Мы любим тебя и скучаем по тебе". Also, correct conjugation is "скучАем", not "скучем".

For card signing it's okay, but you should remember that such lexics refer to really close relationship, so it better to be resticted only to the "bosom buddies" or persons you are in relationship with.

Also, there is a tendency in Russian (rather irritating to me) to limit use of letter "ё", so in foreign names, where its replacement with "е" (it's the norm in the writing) can induce a confusion, it's usually replaced with "йо". Like, "Toyota" is "Тойота", not "Тоёта".

I had such a fight with myself about keeping the "a" in "скучАем" when I conjugated it...bah.

And about my name. I translated it with the "ё" mainly for pronunciation purposes. It is just as correct I think to translate it "Haoми", but the "o" sound in my name is more of a yo, as in yolk. Is it a set rule that "ё" is not used? Not that it really matters how my name is translated I suppose :op

Well, if it's "Naomi", then it's commonly transliterated as such in Russian. About "ё" -- it's not a rule by itself, but more like a tradition: most publications just avoid its use, for various reasons, except in textbooks and so on. It is included in some typography guidelines, though. But mostly it's a matter of preference -- there is a sizeable community that insist on the letter use everywhere.

In any case, ё is never used to represent "yo" when transliterating foreign words. It's only used to "soften" the preceding consonant, as in сёгун (Japanese "shogun"). Use "йо" instead: Найоми.

I see your point, but she will be back. :) She's here as an exhange student every summer for as long as she studies in Russia, and she's starting her Master's when she goes home, so she'll be back (God and the Russian visa people willing I suppose.) Thanks for the alternate goodbye though, it's a word I didn't know, so it'll go on my vocabulary list.
