Відболіло і відпекло...
Jul. 23rd, 2006 12:57 pmIn a Russian translation of Iryna Bilyk's «Вітер», I came across the phrase «отболело и отпекло», which is a direct translation of the line «відболіло і відпекло» (Ukr. «від» = Rus. «от»). However, I can't find a translation for these words in either language. Could someone help, please?

"от" here means that the action described by the verb is no more, or even that the action can no longer be performed because there is no object for this action anymore: "отболело" - means some part of me or some concept in my mind did so much pain that it was destroyed by that pain, and therefore, there is no more pain in me. Same about "отпекло", but with the verb "печь" (bake, burn).
