Hey guys. This is rather lengthy, demanding...

Can someone please help me with my exercise that deals with perfective and imperfective? I've listed some of the questions from my assignments, my answers, and the reason that I chose the one that I did. If I've chosen incorrectly, please say why. Thank you, you wonderful, helpful people of this community.

1. Студент начал (читать/прочитать) текст. (imp. because the action is not complete)
2. Он недавно бросил (купить/покупить). (No answer. What does this mean??!)
3. После окончания аспирантуры она продолжала (заниматься/заняться) наукой. (imp. because continual or habitual action)
4. Перестаньте (вмешиваться/вмешаться). (perf. because I think that imperatives are always perfective -- unsure of this)
5. Этот футболист закончил (выступать/выступить) когда уму было триднадцать шесть лет. (perf. because it's something that's finished)
6. Он сел за столик и стал (ждать/подождать) официанта.(imp. because incomplete action)
7. Прекратите (спорить/поспорить). (imp. because of imperative)
8. Оратор кончил (говорить/сказать) и вернулся на свое место. (eh..)
9. Забод прекратил (выпустить/выпускать) автомобили старой модификации. (perf. because completed)

I think there might be a typo in that second sentence. It probably should read "Он недавно бросил курить" - he recently quit smoking.

No, it's курить.

покурить is "to have a smoke", курить is "to smoke" :)

4. No, here it is Перестаньте вмешиваться. Because you should use imperfective after imperatives of the "phase" verbs (i.e. to begin, to continue, to finish).
5. Этот футболист закончил выступать - for the same reason.
7. Прекратите спорить - for the same reason.

9. You must have meant завод :-)

I guess all the examples, no matter imperatives or not, refer to the same rule: after a "phase" verb one should use an imperfective.

Sorry to say, but it seems you've mistaken several times:
the 4th sentence, the 5th sentence and the 7th sentence.

Everything is right this time :-)
I meant "phase" verbs, not "phrase": to begin - the beginning phase/stage, to continue, to finish...

9 - right variant but wrong explanation: выпускать is impf because of the phase verb

+1. Otherwise it's "when mind was thirtyteen six years old."

Well, I'm unpardonably late, so everything has already been said. Yet I'd like to point out that the fifth sentence is totally spoiled. It should be "Этот футболист перестал выступать, когда ему было тридцать шесть лет" (it is rather "stopped performing" and not "finished performing"; there should be a comma; "уму" is an obvious typo and it's either 36 or 13 years, not "13 6").

- I'm 90-60-90
- What the heck does that suppose to mean?
- Well, I'm 90, but my mind works just as if it were just 60 year old!
- Oh, I see. And what does the last 90 mean?
- It means I'm still 90 anyway...
