What is the russian name of the "@" character? Is this character used for anything in Russian writing (besides e-mail addresses)?

I suppose @ is used in such contexts only because it is there on the computer keyboard, along with &, *, #, ^. Otherwise we (Russians) wouldn't use it at all except in e-mail addresses.

never actually knew why, but the Russian for "@" is "собака" (sobaka = "dog") :) but I prefer to say "at"...

Can't really think of where else it's being used (if it is).... =(

Actually, there are people who don't know that @ has other names except "собака" :) That's why I usually say "собака" for @, "and" for & etc.

It is almost universally referred as "собака", and if the story that I've heard is true, the origin of this name is in one of once popular text-based adventure/role-playing games of so called "rogue-like" type, most probably ADOM, where player's dog was represented on the schreen by this character.

The "@" is called "а коммерческое". I can't explain in details the usage of it, but the name is used, though very seldom, in computer slang, too. Yes, it is almost always mentioned as "собачка" at present, but it was not the original name.
