I suppose @ is used in such contexts only because it is there on the computer keyboard, along with &, *, #, ^. Otherwise we (Russians) wouldn't use it at all except in e-mail addresses.
It is almost universally referred as "собака", and if the story that I've heard is true, the origin of this name is in one of once popular text-based adventure/role-playing games of so called "rogue-like" type, most probably ADOM, where player's dog was represented on the schreen by this character.
What is the reason for giving right answer second (third, fourth ... etc) time in the same thread ? : ) And what is the reason for inventing "right answers" and using rare words ? To show every one how helpfull you are ? : )
Surely, this symbol has been used in Russian long before Inet and e-mails and computers! (don't you listen to the young ones here - lol) The "@" is called "а коммерческое". I can't explain in details the usage of it, but the name is used, though very seldom, in computer slang, too. Yes, it is almost always mentioned as "собачка" at present, but it was not the original name.
