Answering Machine

I teach ESL classes to old Russian folks, partly, as a way to practice speaking Russian. I want to reprogram my answering machine to include a message in Russian, in case any of them need to call me, they will know whats going on. Anyway, having never called any Russian-speaking persons answering machine, I don't know the appropriate idioms. Please, help me out. I've included some minimal guesses.

"Hi, you have reached David"
* Здравствуйте, ????

"I am not home right now"
* Сейчас меня нет дома. (Sounds really weird to me.)

"Please leave a message ..."
* ????

"And I will call you back later"
* ... а я вам перезвоню попоже.

"вы дозвонились Дэвиду" is not absolutely correct. It might mean "you reached David after multiple attempts", or "you finally reached David whom you so wanted to talk".

You could simply say "Вы звоните Дэвиду", or even more simple: "Это Дэвид".

зависит от контекста.
к примеру,
-Give me that paper, please.
-There you go. (Вот, держи)

или

-There you go. Isn't it just like a woman! — Вот видишь? Только свяжись с женщиной!
-There you go, acting rude and ugly! — Ну что, опять хамишь.

I'd go with Это Дэвид. If you say позвонили Дэвид, it means literally, "You called David," which should be... pretty obvious... especially if these folks are the only Russian-only speaking people that will be calling you.

Hahahaha, so much to analyze over an answering machine message!! But I always record mine at least 9 or 10 times before I'm actually happy with it. OCD, anybody?

And by the way, I think teaching ESL to older people is great! Good luck with it!

I remember a Russian answering machine I called once that said, "the answering maching isn't working, this is the refrigerator..." anyway, it was really funny.

There's a variant.. "the answering maching is drunk, this is the refrigerator..."
=))
