I just read the poem that was just posted here yesterday, and thought it was really nice. So, I practiced a little, and recorded myself saying the poem. I'm just curious, what do you guys think of my pronunciation? Horrible, decent, good, great? I'm American, btw, although my ancestors are from Russia, if that makes any difference.

Here it is

спасибо!

What kind of ancestors are you talking about - grandparents?

Well, the accent is there all right, but I could understand everything you said perfectly, which is not always true of every American (including teachers) who attempt to speak Russian. Kudos! The more you speak, the better your pronounciation will be.

I listened to it one more time. The two biggest things you need to concentrate on are palatalized l's and intonations, they don't sound natural. Otherwise, pretty good. The first sentence for some reason reminded me Georgian accent (not the state, the country in Caucasus).

Are you studying by yourself or with an instructor? Find a native Russian speaker and ask them to demonstrate the difference. I can describe the tongue movement, but that won't do a whole lot of good without live demo. Just a couple hours ago I was teaching a Korean to roll her Rs. That was an interesting, if at times frustrating, experience.

As far as intonations, understanding what you said would help a lot. As well as listening to spoken Russian a lot, and following along with the text. I can hear the inflections, but it might be just my experience with learning languages. It helps at first to draw arrows where to raise the voice, where to let it drop, but first you need to hear it, later it becomes second nature.

Cool, you sound very Russian! So much better than mine.

Since you're into a bunch of languages, I'd love to hear you speak your favorites. :-D

I like your comment about Danish, heh! :)
But that's what makes it unique and interesting to study for me. :)

Wow, that's wonderful. It's better than anyone in my class, and better than I could do myself, certainly. Прекрасно!

Do you have the written version? I can't make out many words....that's pretty sad on my part. But I'm a новичок, so I guess it's normal.
