[identity profile] shrewreader.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] learn_russian
This is one of those questions that, if I were a bit more techno-savvy (and it were earlier in the day), I would likely be able to sort out the answer myself.

In this community, as in others, people have been able to present these wonderfully neat posts in both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets.

I would dearly love to be able to do the same, but can make neither heads nor tails of Gorodyansky's instructions.

Any advice welcome. Thanks!

What operating system are you using? Windows? Mac OS? Linux?

I can help for Windows and Linux, but Mac OS I'd be stumped on.

The _real_ solution is to install cyrillic support (using Windows installation disc). In all Windows 2000 it chould be done through Start - Settings - Control Panel - Regional Settings, then
1) at the first tab (General) check a box against Cyrillic
2) at the last tab (Input Locales) click 'Add' button and select 'Russian'-'Russian' pair. Then 2 OKs and it should be working well.
By default one switches between locales with alt+shift, but in the Input Locales tab I told you above one can change it to ctrl+shift (the 'change key sequence' button).

I hope it helps.

* sorry for typo, "should" instead of "chould"

and i forgot to tell you'll be needing the disc only for 1). dont be surprised if it'll require a restart (i just dont remember)

If you're not wanting to actually learn to type in Cyrillic (it can be a pain to learn, especially if you don't have stickers to tell you which keys are which), you can use Translit.ru (http://www.translit.ru): type in transliteration, click a button, and it's transformed into Cyrillic.

I usually type directly in Cyrillic, but when I'm in a hurry, I use Translit.ru because I'm still so slow at it.

Someone else will probably come along and explain how to actually type in Cyrillic, once you let us know what operating system you're using.

Heh. I cheat and use the phonetic layout. Translit.ru sounds nice, though.

It's especially useful when I'm using a public computer that I'm not allowed to fiddle with. =)

Could you please tell me what should you press on your keyboard in order to get letter ш, щ, э, ь, ъ, й?

what's with this surprised tone? it's only logical! don't you feel that "[" sounds the same as "ш"? then you should be really hopeless!

Shame on me! I don't... Decapitation is the only cure of my disease, yes? Or a holiday in Bobruisk will go, too? ;-)
