Jun. 29th, 2005 02:35 amFor the number тысяча, would it still remain in its genitive form if preceeded by a number, say восемь, but the sentence itself would have the восемь in the dative?
Ex: Я завидую восми тысяче девушкам. (sorry for the randomness)

It depends on what number immediately precedes девушки. For numerals thousand, million and greater, девушки is not part of the object and are always in Genitive. For smaller numbers, they're part of the object and they change to whatever case the numeral is in. Yes, there is no logical explanation, and we all know this is screwed up. :)
