Just a quick one:

What's the best way of telling someone that your gay in Russian? I've been wondering this for a while... I'd like to avoid all words with negative connotations (naturally) but because I'm not a native speaker, I don't know which words to avoid!

Any help would be appreciated.

Yeeeah, from the Russian gays I've spoken to, it doesn't really seem like a friendly place for the gays.

Was your question out of curiosity? Cuz if you're going to come out to a Russian (if you think he's gay as well), then I dunno, touching would be a good way to coming out! Ha, how naughty.

*sigh*, what is sad and slightly humorous is that the response to "I'd like to avoid all words with negative connotations" is "Then avoid all of them."

Well, what would you expect from the country, in which it was legally prosecuted only 14 years ago?
Gotta stuck with more open-minded folk, I guess ;)

Well, as far as I know, homosexualism was legally prosecuted in some of the US states until very recently, too.

It was classified as a mental disorder/disease (like depression and OCD) until recently.

Correct. In line with what [profile] nymphatacita just said, it was taken off the APA (American Psychological Association) list of mental disorders about 10-20 years ago.

well, but still, noone would've put you in prison (or in mental house) against your will.
Or would they?
I know that in some states oral sex is formally illegal. Doesn't mean a thing, though =)

No it does not. Haha!

I'm pretty sure sodomy is illegal in most states. And I remember hearing a silly law about only the missionary position being the legal one. But pfft. California must not have it, at least not San Fran, for they still have bathhouses.

They wouldn't put gays in prison, but they'd be inclined to it. Same thing in courtrooms. A lot of discrimination.

I think the Supreme Court recently overturned a Texas law against sodomy on constitutional grounds.

Oh no, it was prosecuted in USSR!
USSR and Russia are different countries...or at least should be!
